Social Security Widow and Widower Benefits

Social Security Survivors Benefits are available to widows and widowers based on the earnings of a deceased spouse.  These benefits are often referred to as Social Security Widow or Widower Benefits.  A widow or widower can receive these benefits at any age if she or he is caring for a child under age 16 or disabled who is getting benefits on the record of the deceased spouse.  Regardless of children, however, a widow or widower can receive reduced benefits at age 60.  Also, a widow or widower who is disabled can receive benefits as early as age 50.

A divorced spouse of a worker who dies can get benefits the same as a widow or widower, provided the marriage lasted 10 years or more or the divorced spouse is caring for a child under age 16 or disabled who is getting benefits on the record of the former spouse.

Benefits for Disabled Widows or Widowers

To be eligible for Social Security Survivors Benefits as a disabled widow or widower, the widow or widower must:

  1. Be Between Age 50 and 60.
  2. Be Disabled.  Social Security uses the same disability definition as used with adults for Social Security Disability.
  3. Have a Disability that Started Within Seven Years of the Spouse’s Death.
  4. Apply.

See the Social Security Administration website, Survivors Benefits for Widows or Widowers.
