Social Security Disability
Social Security Disability is a benefit program for adults, age 18 to full retirement, who cannot work. To be entitled to Social Security Disability benefits you must:
- Be Disabled. Social Security has a strict definition of disability. Disability means the inability to work because of a physical or mental impairment expected to last at least one year.
- Be Insured. You must have paid enough Social Security taxes through recent work.
- Apply. Benefits can be paid up to twelve months prior to the application filing date.
If you are entitled to Social Security Disability benefits, your family members may also be entitled to benefits.
Most claims for Social Security Disability benefits are initially denied. You can appeal this denial.
See the Social Security Administration publication Disability Benefits.
